“Is architecture a good profession to choose?”

On today’s episode, I answer Harshita’s question (IG @harshi_0428):

I hope you enjoy the show! Feel free to discuss anything in the comments below. I try to respond to every comment 🙂

“Is architecture a good profession to choose?”

“Is architecture a good profession to choose?”

And the next question was from Hashita. I think I’m saying that correctly. If not, I’m sorry. She asked if it’s good to choose architecture as a profession.

This is the tough one. You guys would know that it’s a tough industry to get into. There’s not a whole lot of jobs for the number of students that are graduating their degrees, but saying that, it’s going to be subjective here. . . .

I love architecture, as you might be able to tell. I think architecture it’s a bloody good profession to be in. But, for how demanding it is and how much work and effort it requires. It’s definitely not an easy course. That’s good, because if you’re putting in the hard work, you’re going to stand out from the rest of the people studying it. And myself, I’ve only done two weeks of an internship inside a firm so I don’t really know what it’s like, exactly in the profession as I’m obviously still studying. But hopefully as I keep going with these videos, and in 5- or 10-years’ time, I can show you an in depth look into what it’s like inside the profession.

I’m doing another internship, probably mid 2020. This year. And, I’ll document the whole thing, and I’ll film it and I’ll show you guys what it’s like inside the profession as well. So hopefully that’s helpful. So yes, I think it’s a great profession to get into it obviously requires a lot of work.

  1. 7 wonderful benefits of a career in Architecture

    1. Interesting and creative work
Architecture is a creative field that requires a great deal of vision and expression. Seeing this vision and creativity manifest itself in your work can be incredibly rewarding. Putting your creative footprint on a building, town or even city is extremely fulfilling.

    2. The field attracts passionate and like-minded people
Architects see the world in a very specific way and share a strong appreciation for buildings, landscapes and how each city is defined by its architecture. If checking out a new structure makes you giddy and your favorite thing to do in a new city is to look at the architecture, this might be the right field for you.

    3. It’s a fascinating, fast-paced career
The field of architecture is dynamic as technologies and techniques are always evolving rapidly. Architects have to constantly educate themselves in order to keep up with the field, which makes it both challenging and exciting. The day-to-day life of an architect can vary, with some days spent in the office, others visiting clients and some days out on site.

    4. Greater appreciation and understanding of the cities and buildings around you
Architects have a unique relationship to the cities they live in and visit. They can appreciate what makes the city’s buildings unique on a much deeper level. Understanding the work and thought that went into creating a city gives you an appreciation that the rest of us can’t quite fathom.

    5. You can make an impact on the city and people around you
The impact of architecture is tangible. You can see the structures and how they serve the city right before your eyes. Not only is this impact very apparent, it also can last centuries and become part of a city’s historic identity.

    6. Respected career
Becoming an architect is a challenging process, but worth the effort. Architects receive a great deal of respect for their work and serve a fundamental role in modern society.

    7. There’s an emphasis on travel
Architects are big travelers. Understanding the vernacular architecture from different countries and cultures is very important for architects. The more you’ve traveled and experienced different architecture styles and influences and seen how they fit into their cities, the better.
