I recently completed my studio 6 project for my Bachelor of Architectural Studies, which required us to make 2 models. One of the models was a site model at a 1 : 1000 scale. My site had an artificially made slope to it, formed using Rhino. I used Rhino to turn the sloped site into a contoured model. This allowed me to create a physical contoured site model from the Rhino model. The 1 : 100 model was a much larger site model requiring a layering of 14 cardboard sheets at 4mm thick each.

This site model required the same process as the smaller model, just at a larger scale.

So here’s a recap to begin. You want to create your site in rhino. If you have a real life site, you can model it in less than 30 seconds using SketchUp and can import that into rhino. I show you how to do that in this video here: https://youtu.be/8jyc2CFolKY

After you have your site modelled, you use the contour command to turn your site into a contour model, rather than a surface to begin creating a physical model of this. You want to start with the lowest layer of your rhino contour, a model turned on and nothing else create a base that is the same dimensions as the area you want to have modelled. I would use a thick material as the base. Remember, your site model will be scaled down usually to 1 : 100, 200 or 500.

If you want to learn about scale in architecture, watch this video: https://youtu.be/YL4it90rMb8

Now, with your base ready layer. Add another piece of card on top of it that is the same dimensions as the base and use the lowest layer of your rhino model as a guideline to where to draw your pencil lines. Once pencilled in, you can use a blade to cut where those lines are. You now have your first contour. Be sure to keep the scraps from it though. Next turn on the next layer in rhino, right? Click the layer and click select objects. This will highlight the layer you want to pencil in on another piece of card, the same dimensions as the base lay over the scraps from the previous contour. You just cut out this acts as a guide to show you where your next contours are. They don’t have to be perfect from here just for your rhino model to make it look similar. Continue this process for the remaining contours until you reach the top layer. Lastly, all you need to do now is begin. Gluing it down. Then you’re all finished.

Not only is it super clean, but Jose utilises laser cutting to get super straight and clean cut lines. He also employs a technique to score clear acrylic. This allows him to have a transparent overlay of his construction detail drawings, resulting in an awesome diagrammatic overlay to his model.

In this episode, we learn about how Jose created the model, exploring the materiality, tools and techniques he used to create it. Jose also shares tips and advice for students inspired by his model who want to make something similar, and get better at architectural model making.

Kyle
Oh, there it is. That’s awesome. Jose, welcome to the show how you doing?

Jose
Fine. Nervous for this interview, but I was looking forward to it.

Kyle
Nothing to be nervous about man but but just to architecture people having a chat.

Unknown Speaker
It’s gonna be a lot of fun.

Kyle
Oh yeah, that’s great. So before we dive into the projects that I’m sure everyone’s really keen to hear about, about how you made it and all that kind of stuff. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What’s your name? And who are you?

Jose
Hi, everybody. I’m somebody Erlanger, and 24 years old. And from the mother. Actually, it was boring, but yeah, oh, man. Oh, and I’m studying here. I in my last semester of architecture, so in my fifth year, I was going to end my career these July for the COVID-19 issue. I don’t know that yet. When

Kyle
you say so. You’re in your final year. I also saw a new Instagram page Yo, you I don’t know if it’s you’ve got your own firm or something like that. You’re working on some some of your own projects is that that I don’t know, interior design studio or something like that. Can you tell us a bit bit about that?

Jose
Yeah. But I created it with my best friend Kelly Cruz. And it stands for of his development of architecture and aesthetics. And yeah, we used to do interior design project like industrial design for some parents and some events. I also participate in the peripheral on either mobile in Milano with another project mostly, it’s less culture. Yeah, that’s it.

Kyle
Joe. So how are you finding it working, doing work on the side as well as studying is that really hard to do? So I start

Jose
working for a firm when I was in my perfect you have detector I guess? Yeah, it was. summer job. An internship. It was hard in the beginning, because I actually didn’t know that much about interior design. It was all about architecture. And it was so much fun. And I learned a lot in just a short period of time, then I work for another firm that is mostly architecture and there was like so much work to do until late night. And you also sometimes have to bring your work home and keep doing it to be sure beyond a it’s a very wrapped up.

Yeah, I definitely is. What are some of your biggest challenges that you’ve been faced with when working for someone else while studying as well working with other people see, it’s difficult because you have so many different ideas. And sometimes you either

have to take in all the ideas and make the best of them. And sometimes you just need to be a good minion and do what They tell you to do, especially when you are like in the second year and third year you have to listen, the other people. And at work, it’s pretty much the same with so much respect and kind of fear or in your boss. But I guess it’s just the same.

Kyle
Yeah. How did you go about getting that that internship you mentioned earlier? Is that, is that something you’re still going through with now? Are you still working for that same firm or is that something different

Jose
now? I’m currently not working in any.

I’m doing my own things. Yeah.

Mountain projects. And to get that internship, well, my goal in that third year, I was so desperate, because I want to get a job. I want to be like, a useful resource, and I thought that was really employable. But I guess I didn’t because my CV like, every single, every single firm, but they actually didn’t reply until now. Most years I get that internship because of my brother, he asked another friend, he can get me an interview.

Kyle
Wow.

Jose
So when the architects saw my CV, she made an interview an appointment with me. And what the process was very short, I guess was two or three days, maybe a week, for the way especially, I guess I did well, because I got the job. Oh, yeah, at the beginning, I was doing the portfolio of the film because they didn’t have it. And there was like, eight years of work that I have to review and put them in layouts for a big portfolio and they give me two weeks or three weeks, I guess to the That, actually, that worked really well, because when a new client came to this studio, they show the portfolio and they just asked me to change these two, they’re going to put these and these and they’re thinking the list goes on and on.

Kyle
Yeah. Was that internship? Was that something you had to do for your uni? Or was that just something you decided to do on the side?

Jose
I have to do from a union before I get my bachelor or the game, but I wanted to do it, like, as soon as I can, because I think I was anxious to get into.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah.

Kyle
Yeah, cuz that’s interesting. In Australia, you don’t have to do any, like any kind of internship or anything for your bachelor’s. So that’s kind of something we have to do on the side, but that’s really interesting. You have to do an internship.

Jose
Yeah, I mean, before this job, I got another one in probably dying will say, but it was for us. pelletizing restaurants mostly graphic design, and I was a graphic designer in junior in this company kinkos Publishing, there was pretty much a design layouts for this book that sells advertising and to tourists in hotels, now was a pretty good idea. And that was the first time I saw something like that. And it was kind of fun to and get into this job because it was totally different than I was expected. And that’s when I get to prove my English because I was there for like five months and then I came here again, and work from home.

Kyle
Wow. So you really do have like a mix of interior design architecture, graphic design. That’s really cool.

Jose
Yeah, I think this year design I guess if it was like a chandelier, we know pretty cool concept. I guess they were Based on their pillows, and the mechanism that has the camera inside the clothes pretty well, so you can choose the intensity of the light and like a dimer.

Kyle
Wow, that’s a fan to do it. Oh yeah. So everyone’s probably wanting to get into this project of yours because when I first saw this I was blown away like, wow, like seriously, I had never seen anything like this done before. And it’s not just me like Yeah, exactly. But like when I posted this post posted this on like Facebook and Instagram and Pinterest and everything, like it just blows up because everyone seriously loves it. Can you tell us what the project brief was for that project?

Jose
I can show you the project is right here.

Kyle
Let’s say awesome. Yeah, I’m I love it. So the project

was

Jose
building and has shopping center and parking in the first floor of our convenience shopping center, there was another Park, then offices apartments. And yeah. So it was like a pretty pretty big building. I have to do three models for the product. One in one 100 this one 125 and the other one was 100 this case, right so there are more models of this

Kyle
one. Yeah. Oh, do you have them but like, Can we say

Jose
no, I don’t have this one. I go away because the other one the 100. It was so big. I didn’t want to bring

Kyle
did you use the same style as you did for this one

Jose
here? No. The other one was, was also a section man area was an unscored acrylic. So I guess he was declined.

Kyle
Yeah. So I’m sorry, continue. I kind Put it in there. I’m excited

Jose
about this one. These proto these project whether it’s a triplex an apartment, we wanted to show the construction details so as you can see here

also

here so you can see all all the things that happen inside three bricks and divorce in steel pretty much was all about steel now I was so obsessed with the material and I do the whole structuring still the process of doing this model was so much fun because it was like kind of bring me bang back to my childhood when I was to play with boxes in made a lot of cities because I didn’t have Legos when And so when I build the model, I did it with my sister as well singing and dancing around the house.

And we were having a lot, but it was, it was pretty fun.

Kyle
That’s awesome. Can you talk us through the materials you use for this project here for the model and then how they represent the real life materials as well. That’d be cool. For the Monday I use cardboard

Unknown Speaker
for the structure. Actually,

Jose
mostly everything because I use it for the structure for the phone mature. The stairs. Yeah, the walls, everything. Everything means in cardboard. I wanted to do it monochromatic and I was intend to do it. White man. I remember when it’s called an acrylic before and the skirt looks white. So you wouldn’t pop up. As I wanted to do, so I just do it like beads. It’s kind of been this karate lick. Actually, it wasn’t like the idea was mine. It was my teachers IDM cask everybody to do the same model with to skirt the trail mine was pretty into the details. So I guess he went well, yeah. And also the time was really short for everybody when you have to manage their time to do such a big project with all your courses and I mean your classes, your exams and you have to do pre models, like about eight to 14, blue papers and you have a lot to do also the rendering and the post production. So you have to choose where you want to focus in after my experience in interior design. I just wanted to show what I can do. That’s cool

Unknown Speaker
as an interior design

Kyle
the floorboards in that as well. They were, I saw in the video that I posted. It’s like a, like a, it looks like timber, but it’s Did you say that was cardboard? How’d you do that?

Jose
Okay. The floor is there.

Kyle
Yeah. Okay, so that’s actual timber, is it? Yep. Ah, that’s cool. So that glass screen, I guess everyone would be wondering how you managed to do that. So in my opinion, that’s probably like the key feature of the project. So I’m sure everyone’s learning how you did it. Can you first kind of explain the inspiration behind that? How that came up and what decided, but how did you decide that that is something you wanted to do?

Jose
I just wanted to show the detail of the sections we did for this project. I know many people may wonder how I came up with this, but as I told you, it was my teachers idea. Everybody won. And happy to do it. I guess what was different to the other ones was the level of detail it took me a while to do the cat for the score because it’s laser cutting it was mostly delete lines because if you pay attention really close to the skirt acrylic, you will see that it’s actually my blueprint that I presented was my sections. I did four sections for this model and I did the project in Revit. And I expect it to come out and then I did

the laser again,

Kyle
just like so you cut it in Revit and then you get the the elevation or the section cut from Revit and you put it into AutoCAD so you got the lines and then you use that in the light. I don’t know how it really laser cutters works. I haven’t used one myself. done a bit of 3d printing and stuff. But so the laser cutter is it just takes that section from AutoCAD, and then prints it onto the acrylic and it kind of just scores it.

Jose
Yeah, the laser cut. It depends how much power you put into the later and you can score and you can cut. After I discover my third year, I guess the source card. I wanted to do something like this, but I really had an opportunity, I guess, to do it. And then it’s actually pretty easy as soon as you realize how it’s and actually I didn’t do extra work because there was from my blueprints that I already had to do it for my project. So I just delete lines and put everything I needed to show on the laser score wasn’t actually that expensive, because people see this model and they think that is a coincidence. A lot of money and a lot of time. And as I drew, this was a pretty fun model to do with my sister while singing and dancing around the house. And also, it wasn’t that expensive, as many people can think. And the furniture. It’s also in cardboard. Actually, it was also laser scored, but on cardboard, and I had them.

Kyle
That’s cool. You said it didn’t take too long. Do you know, a rough estimate? How long did it actually take to make the model? I guess an hour’s How? How many hours did it take?

Jose
I mean, it took me three days. But I mean, it wasn’t like the complete days. Yeah, it was because there was my Yeah, my last week before the final presentation. So I had to do pre models in two weeks. And yeah, I guess this one could be done in just one day. But I guess that was, Wow, man, you have to do anything you have to get your piece done before and just put them all together. Yeah, it’s all about that preparation before actually getting through it. Do you have some general tips for someone who’s inspired by design? Do you have any? Yeah, just general advice for someone who wants to do something like this. First of all, you have to think of the scale of the project because they I mean, this one worked really well because the scale was like, really big. It’s almost like Bobby’s house. Yeah. So much we can be you can you as you can see everything in destructuring looks pretty cool when you when you see it. And I don’t think he works for like, for big, big projects, and nice. You want it to show just little things and all the later parts. I mean, you could have at our Really big project in third scape. But I guess you can show just a section apart in scar technique and will work really well also you have to think of the materials the I mean, you have to bring everything in the center better. Yeah. Because everything together is the thing that is going to take more time than also just get it done. Yeah. You have to think at the material the time and where you are going to get the material. Also, you have to think about the economics because I mean, it doesn’t take too much money to do things like this. You have to think also about that not use the laser cut for everything. You can use your scissors. Yeah, you had those, this acrylic screen over it. How did you manage to keep that up and attach it? Is it just attached to the, like a like a curtain wall or is it separate to the actual design?

Kyle
Does that make sense?

Jose
It’s it’s a patch To the model, I was actually so much worried about that too, in many, many, many people was asking. I mean, we’re asking for that question. Also how they managed to do it so clean without any numeric. Yeah. And I guess it was all my sister and the cleaning because she was so much careful about that.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I was just

Jose
trying to do everything in time. So I was just cut.

I wanted to finish this as soon as I can. But she was like, really perfectionist about the gluing everything together. It actually didn’t show that much glue. You really need to like put an eye in so closed see the loop? And yeah, I mean, it’s just practice, I guess. are being just so much careful.

Kyle
Having the time to actually take your time with it and yeah, be careful with it.

Jose
Yeah, I mean, because I this structure, it wasn’t easy because I mean, as you can see here, you don’t have anything to bring the model all together so when I put it in front of me on the table, they just follow down. Yeah, the skirt also was you

get the structure

more solid.

Kyle
And yeah, what glue did you use for it? Because you can’t really see any glue marks or anything. It’s really cool. Yeah. Oh, I just so just like normal craft glue.

Jose
I mean, I didn’t have any other blues. I use

Kyle
Listen, you don’t need anything fancy. Everyone might be thinking like, wow, Jose, his work is perfect. And he’s so good at architecture, which he is, but to remind people that you’re human. What do you think was one of the biggest mistakes he made in architecture school? biggest mistakes?

Jose
get so much stress out of the concept and the design and not get the work done. Like, quickly. I mean, you have to move really quickly with your ideas, get it done, do the whole process with your teacher. I guess my biggest mistake was that not paying attention to what the teacher side is trying to focus on just one idea and just improve that idea as much as you can.

Kyle
And so this is something I asked every guest. So what do you think is the most important thing to know as an architecture student very

Jose
It’s an issue.

You really have to pay attention. So you’re meant to have been organized, with your time with your classes with everything you have to put an order in your life. And as a student, it will be so helpful. Yeah. And you’re supposed to know that you have to be so productive because they aren’t going to teach you how to do things. They’re not going to teach you how to do models not going to use programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or whatever they asked you to do, but they just suppose you know everything.

Kyle
Okay, so, lastly, where can people get in contact with you or follow you if they want to continue with your journey

Jose
with my journey

they can follow me on Instagram. It’s actually the only social media use a Nowadays, nobody 96

Kyle
so that was awesome. Thank you so much for sharing us. Your all your ideas and how you did it. I think a lot of students are gonna find that super helpful. Man. I’ll leave you to it. Thank you so much again, I really appreciate it.

Jose
Thank you Kyle.

On today's episode, I talk through some of my reasoning behind why I don’t care about my grades in architecture school.
Specifically, I'll talk about:
•	Pushing yourself into new challenges, outside of your comfort zone.
•	Caring about the opinions of others

0:00

This is the Successful Archi Students podcast episode four.

Hey guys, welcome to today’s show. Today I want to talk about why I don’t care so much about my grades and the importance of failure. And I’ll talk about some my mistakes and some of the things I’ve failed as well so that you guys can learn from them.

So before getting into any of this, I just want to ask and put out a simple question of how many of you go through the feedback that your tutors or your jurors or your teachers, whatever you want to call them, that they give you? Do you go through the feedback that they leave on your assessments and on your submissions? I ask this because I never used to. The way it would work for me is that I would do an assessment, I would do my project, I would hand it up and I would get my grades back and I’d look at my grades like oh, cool, I did really well, really bad or really average, then I’d move on. There was nothing after receiving my grade. I wouldn’t really do anything with my feedback. I might say that “Oh, okay. I could do this better, this better. I did well at this”, but there was no real analysing of the things that my tutors were saying.

However, I believe the best lessons in life aren’t from your successes, but from your failures. And I completely believe that you don’t have to be the best at everything you do. There is room for making mistakes and failing and not doing really well as you think you would, because that’s okay. And I’ll be completely transparent here. I just got my grades back for my semester, my second year, second semester. So I’m now finished second year, I got my grades back. And I did well in two of my subjects, in design studio and in my design media, however, I didn’t do so well in my design construction multi story. In fact, I got a P2, which is just, actually, I got a P1, which is just passing pretty much And to be honest, it doesn’t bother me at all what the grade was, and I think it’s okay to fail. Because if you’re not failing, you’re not pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone and outside your boundaries that you know, however, I don’t think it’s okay to fail the same thing twice, because that means you’re not learning from your mistakes and you’re kind of just skimming over the things you’ve done bad. And there’s no lesson to be learned from that. So I didn’t do too well in this one subject. However, I didn’t dwell on it. Instead, I asked myself, why did I do bad in this? It’s a Simple question. But if you don’t ask it, then you won’t realize where you went wrong and you won’t be able to learn from your mistakes.

And so what I used to do, where I just move on, after I see received my grade, I was lacking them in the next semester and the next semester and the next semester after that, because I haven’t learned from my previous mistakes, and so there’s no progressing forward. So after my semester, what I did is I grabbed a pad in the pen, and I wrote down my three subjects design media, design, studio design, construction, multi story, and I wrote down the grades I got, and I started with the one I did best, which was my studio, and I considered why I did as well as I did. And the reason was because I went to all my classes and I brought work every single week that my teachers could give me feedback on and I could go on, grab their feedback and make changes to my work base of what they said about my design, maybe I did well at that because I just slaved on that for lots and lots of hours and why I didn’t do So Well, on my construction multistorey I wrote down: because I didn’t go to all my classes, I became lazy.

I would always be the last to talk to my teachers during my tutoring sessions. And by the end of the day, I would be tired and I’d be hungry and I’d make the excuse of that I’m too hungry, I’m going to go home and eat and then sleep. However, I did this once I did this maybe twice, maybe three times. And that compounds up and it builds up. And so when you fall behind one week, that’s going to keep on rolling over to the next week and the next week, and you’re really going to fall extremely behind. And that’s exactly what happened to me. I fell behind from the start, because I was lazy and I was making excuses not to go to my class. And so I missed out on the opportunity of talking with my teachers and getting their feedback so that I can make amendments and changes to my own work and that is ultimately the reason why I didn’t do so well in this subject. I put in the same amount of hours I would put into any other project. But because I didn’t have that feedback, I wasn’t able to make the changes. And I wasn’t able to understand what I was doing wrong. And so when it came to it, my details were completely wrong. And although they looked really nice, and I put in the time and effort to, you know, try my hardest with them, I just didn’t have the same result as everybody else, because I didn’t have that opportunity of talking with my teachers, because I deprived myself of that opportunity. So yes, I’m blaming myself completely. And I think that’s also very important to do as well.

If you’re blaming other people, and you’re making alibis saying that they’re the reason why you didn’t do so well. You know, “I had bills to pay”, “ I didn’t have the time to work on it because I was working on something else” or “an event came up”. Well, that’s okay. But blame yourself for it because then you can learn from it and move on. So that next time you don’t make that same mistake.

So there’s this quote, which goes, “the smoothest stone is always in the roughest part of the stream.” And what that kind of means in terms of being an architecture student is that through failing and being pushed through the shitty times and the hard times, that is what makes you the best student you can be because you’re then learning from your mistakes and becoming a lot more knowledgeable.

I believe that if you’re not failing, then you’re not pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone and outside of your own boundaries, so that you can’t learn. But this raises the question, why do we care about our grades anyway? Most the time, it’s to impress other people around us, whether it be our family or our friends, or the people we go to school with. We want to look like we’re doing well so that we can feel good about ourselves. However, I don’t think you should care about the opinions of others because that will be holding you back from trying new things.

You might have one specific architectural drawing style. However, if you never try something new then you might not know if there’s a better way to do it. So rather than using your same style every single semester you have, I think you should probably try different things and spice it up so that you’re not always doing that same thing. And you might not get as good of a grade as you usually would. But then you will know for next time that if you can, you can rule that one out. But you never know, that architectural drawing style might be a lot better than the one you originally had. But you wouldn’t know that if you didn’t try it. So you’ve got to try new things.

So I think that’s my lesson for you guys today. Don’t stop learning after you receive your grades. Definitely analyse why you did the way you did. So why you got an average grade, why you got a really good grade or why you did a really why you got a really bad grade this semester. Because if you don’t ask yourself those questions, you can’t learn from the work you’ve been doing. I think a lot of the time we skip over the feedback because we’re only caring about getting the work done and getting our grade and then getting our degree and that’s the end of it. But if you want to be successful it’s a lot more than that. You really need to understand why you’re doing what you’re doing. And you need to be able to have some clarity in that so that you can get better at the stuff you’re going to be doing. Because ultimately, what you’re doing now is what you’re going to be doing in the future as your profession. And you’re going to have clients and you’re going to, if you want to run your own firm, you need those skills before you you’re able to work for yourself and create the lifestyle you want from that.

So you can learn from your successes, but you will learn even more from your failures because then you can move forward. It’s okay to fail just don’t fail the same thing twice. And that is ultimately why I don’t care about my grades in architecture school.

I hope you guys enjoyed this episode. If you did, please leave some feedback. Leave some comments and message me on Instagram.

I’ll see you on the next episode of the Successful Archi Student’s Podcast.

On today's episode, I try to clarify what the most important tip for architecture students is and share some of the key things that successful people have in common.

Specifically, I'll talk about:

•	The impact of replacing “I can’t do that”, with “how can I do that?”
•	How in this day and age, we get carried away reacting to things – social media, new trends – and how we are more and more being driven away from our own creativity and productivity.
•	The importance of having a “bigger vision” in mind so that you have something to aim at.

0:00

This is the Successful Archi Student’s podcast, Episode Two. Welcome to the second episode of the Successful Archi Student’s podcast. That’s right, today is number two. It doesn’t really sound right. Anyways, today I’ll be talking a little bit more about what I was talking about in the last episode about the number one tip for success as a student. In that episode, I talked about the importance of fixing your mindset, which I understand is quite difficult to understand if there’s no further clarification on that. So I’m going to try and clear some things up about what I meant by that. A lot of people and students talk themselves down and have a lot of negative self talk and thoughts without really noticing it. And it really limits their potential and their skill level. Telling yourself you can’t do something immediately closes off that as an option.

So, what I mean by this is say, if you’re telling yourself you can’t get a job after you graduate, because there’s no jobs out there, or if you’re trying to get into university and you’re telling yourself, you can’t afford it. Or maybe you’ve seen some other student’s work on Instagram and you’re telling yourself your work will never be as good as that. These objections only become true when you realize them as being true. Until then they are completely achievable. So rather than saying it’s not possible, ask yourself, How can I make it possible? If no one is hiring? Well, that’s the perfect opportunity to start your own work. If you can’t get into university because you can’t afford it, you’re living in the the age of fundraising, you know, there’s a million and one ways to raise the capital. Or, you need to be able to go to university and just telling yourself that you can’t afford it. It’s just kind of an excuse for not being able to do it. If you’re telling yourself your project will never look that good. Rather than doing that, ask yourself, How can I make my project look as good as that or better? So this would take time and practice to turn this into a habit. The idea of replacing I can’t with how can I? But I truly, truly believe that once you start implementing this idea and this habit, you’ll be opened up to so many more opportunities that you never realized before.

When I told my friends and family that I work over 30 hours a week in my part time job and study full time, obviously putting in a lot of hours into my education. And I mentioned that I want to start my own brand to help students succeed. They kind of just laughed at me and told me it’s not possible. And if I had listened to them, and said, Oh, yeah, it’s not possible. I don’t have time to be able to do that. Then, you know, I wouldn’t be here today talking on this podcast. Instead, I respected the idea that this is their opinions. And instead, I asked myself, how can I make this possible? How can I work over almost full time hours at my part time job and work forward? I’m studying full time as well putting in close to 80 hours a week and still have time to work on successful Archi Student.

The answer involved a lot of late nights and kind of sacrificing some of the more luxurious things in life like sitting on the couch and watching Netflix and scrolling through social media, but I fully committed to this. And now I’m waking up every morning working on something I’m truly passionate about. But often when I talk about delaying gratification, and putting off kind of the luxurious things in life now so that you can have them later in life at a multiplied level, they aren’t usually luxurious things at all. Things like scrolling through social media, or sitting on the couch and watching reality TV shows. They’re not really fulfilling things in life, I’d much prefer to be working on something that truly gets me fired up and something I’m passionate about. And we kind of just get carried away in this day and age with these things we react to. We get caught up reacting to these things. Instead of creating our own stuff and working on something that we plan to have done. That’s why procrastinating is really popular at the moment, because we do just get carried away with these “instant gratifiers” that just carry us away to be reactive rather than productive.

I do think this kind of happens because of a fear of missing out. We feel we’re missing out on watching the new show or, fear of missing out that we’re going to miss one of our friends post and we’re not going to like it and they’re going to notice that and they’re going to roast us about it. But I truthfully believe that we’re fearing missing out on the wrong thing.

But how do you build up that passion to be to be doing something you love every single day, working on architecture, working on cool buildings, and doing what you love every single day? It’s like, if you’re aiming at a dartboard blind sighted trying to hit the bullseye, you’re not really going to hit it. If you’ve got a blindfold on or yours eyes are closed, it’s hard to hit that bullseye. If you want to hit the bullseye, you have to be clear-sightedly looking at it, aiming at it using all your attention on that and truly being tunnel visioned on it so that you you’re only focused on that.

5:02

And that’s exactly like life, if you’re trying to get somewhere in life, you want to run your own architecture firm, you want to be successful at architecture, you have to have a clear vision and a goal of how you’re going to get there and what it actually is, if you actually know what you want out of life, it makes it so much easier to start working towards it and start structuring a plan and working towards that goal.

So I think my kind of call to action here is to is to write down your goals and constantly come back to them and revise them and rethink them and restructure them. And then over time, you’ll find yourself just being way more motivated and and keen to succeed because of this. You can actually start making it happen just by having that vision in mind and knowing what it is you want to achieve.

It does involve discipline and hard work but that’s just a requirement of success. It’s something that needs to be done. So you may as well to do it sooner than later.

So to recap over this episode, stop telling yourself negative things. If you’re saying you can’t do something, then you can’t do it. But if you’re asking yourself the question of “how can I achieve this, how can I make this possible”, then it makes it easier. And you’re not limiting yourself to not being able to achieve that thing. Once you start writing down your goals. And you start to realize the life that you want to live and you have a bigger vision of that, then you start to realize you fear missing out on some really silly things such as social media and sitting on the couch watching Netflix.

The idea of that it takes time and hard work and discipline to be successful. So you might as well put in that hard work, discipline and time sooner than later. So that’s the number one tip I have for architecture students is to know what you’re aiming at. It makes it so much easier to achieve stuff when you’ve got a vision of it and you can start to plan and schedule towards that to make it possible. Thank you guys so much for watching the episode. I really appreciate your guys support and until next time, enjoy your studies.

I’ve been wanting to do this probably for a little over eight months. You guys would know this better than anyone, Architecture students don’t have a whole lot of time on their hands. But saying that I’m now finished my second year and I have holidays and so I’m going to have the next couple of months to kind of give you guys some content with the podcast. So, yes, welcome to the podcast. This is going to be a lot of fun and you guys are going to learn a lot from this I’m hoping. Before I get into today’s content though, I want to talk a little bit about Successful Archi Student and kind of what what it is and why I decided to start it really. So Successful Archi Student is a platform I guess for students to come together and share their ideas and to grow as architects. I want to turn you into the 1% of architecture students that end up getting a job and really having success in your profession. Because there’s a lot of things that universities don’t teach such as how to get a job and gain motivation and set some goals that will really take your skills to the next level and give you the life you want to live. Whether you’re still in high school and you’re just thinking about the profession or you’re on the other side, where you’ve just graduated and you’re trying to find a job. That’s what Successful Archi Student’s all about. Just helping you guys succeed in your profession and in your education, I guess.

1:39

So at the moment, we are just on Instagram, I guess, like we’ve got the website where I post some blog articles and we’ve got some other things going on like the Facebook page. But primarily we are just on Instagram, which, it’s good and I really enjoy connecting with you guys and Talking about kind of architecture in general and how you guys are going with your studying. I speak with a lot of people overseas, in different countries, and it is just great connecting with you guys. I think you guys are what makes a Successful Archi Student what it is. So I’m really appreciative for you guys. But saying that it is good to have that Instagram page and to be able to do that. But I can only really post these quick images or these short videos, I guess where I don’t really get into a whole lot of content about what I really intended Successful Archi Student to be about. And so that’s why I started the podcast now.

2:43

Hopefully, I can delve into some of these topics with a lot more depth and really bring some light to the world of architecture to you guys. So with the podcast, I’m hoping to be able to bring some professional and working architects onto the show To ask them some questions and because these guys and gals are working in the profession, and they’ve been through the education, they’ve obviously succeeded doing what they are. So I think to be able to bring some architects onto the show and learn from them would do Myself and you guys a whole lot of good, I guess, for lack of a better word. But yeah, so that’s something I’m planning on doing with the show. I also want to bring you guys onto the show as well. I feel like if you’ve done a really good project, and your teachers absolutely loved it, and all your friends and your peers, told you how well you did, I don’t think you should keep that to yourself. I really think to be able to bring you guys onto the show, to talk about your projects and if you’ve got some study tips for other students as well, I think it would just be a great opportunity to share with each other and to be able to learn as architecture students from one another. So, that’s one of my main goals for the podcast is to bring you guys on to talk about your projects. Some of you fourth and fifth year students as well have a lot of information and some good tips. You’ve been talking to me on Instagram as well. So to bring some of you guys onto the show, and some architects as well, I think would give you guys some amazing value, myself too. So that’s pretty much all I’ve got to say about the podcast, I think we should get straight into the content now. Today I want to talk about the number one thing to help you succeed as an architecture student. A lot of you guys message me on Instagram and say, what’s the one tip? The one hack, or, there’s a bunch of words, the one clue; that you have that will make you a successful architecture student. And really, that’s a that’s a tough question. And there’s not really just one simple answer because it is very dependent on the on who you are on where you’re studying and, and what your story is. There’s a whole lot that goes on behind That question. But despite that, I’ve been thinking about it and playing in my head over and over. Like, what is that one? That one thing if I could give you guys one tip to help you succeed as an Archi student, what would it be?

5:10

And I was thinking, maybe it’s one of the three P’s. You know, you’ve got passion, persistence, and patience, if you’ve got all three of those that is going to be, it’s going to do a hell of a lot to help you succeed and being patient, being persistent and being passionate about what you do that those three things that are keys. But then I also thought it could be your habits and the routines you create in your life, you know, the fact that you don’t check your phone every 15 minutes when you’re studying, because that’s a habit you’ve created, or you’ve created a good habit of waking up early every morning. And that’s the one thing that helps you succeed. Then I also thought maybe it’s the ability to sacrifice the finer things in life now, so that you can reap the rewards later. The idea of delaying gratification, that’s that kind of idea of; rather than partying now and studying later you study now so you can party later stress free and you’ve just, yeah, delaying gratitude, you’re delaying the gratification in your life.

But when I really narrowed it down it wasn’t just one of these individual three things. I had to think about what all three of those had in common. And it was your mindset, if you’re having negative thoughts and you’re telling yourself these toxic things. Yeah, it doesn’t matter how patient you are doesn’t matter how persistent you are. Doesn’t matter if you’ve got the most amazing routines in your life. You know, that’s the one thing that’s holding you back from achieving greatness.

Now I know this is quite a broad answer to “fix your mindset”. But I truly believe that once you start to organize your thoughts to work for you, then you know waking up becomes easy, drafting lines becomes easy, making models becomes easy. Just because that is what drives your passion in the end.

Now, I think I’m probably going to end the episode there because I want to keep these short and snappy, but I’m going to talk about this a bit more in the next episode. And a little spoiler, I guess, but it’s about having a bigger vision, and planning out kind of what the future holds for you. Because once you use your imagination to conjure up this idea of a successful life, then it makes it a whole lot easier to have something to drive towards. And I think that’s when you become successful. So yes, thank you guys so much for listening. I really hope to see you in the next episode, and I really hope to hear from a couple of you via email or Instagram direct message. If you guys want to be on the show, just send me an email Kyle@successfularchistudent.com. That’s K Y L E at successful archi student.com or message me on instagram just @successfularchistudent thank you guys again so much you guys are what make successful archi student great and I really appreciate you guys watching this thank you and I’ll see you in the next show.

I’m overwhelmed to have gotten such positive feedback from the last article on drafting tips, so I thought I’d send another, only this time I’m writing 5 model making tips for architecture students!

So, model making, like drafting, isn’t something that every architect or student enjoys. It’s really a hit-or-miss. I know some people that could spend countless days putting together a beautifully hand-crafted model whereas I’m more like “let’s build it in BIM and 3D print it :’D”

It really depends on your preference of design techniques. Despite that, model making is still prevalent even with today’s immersive technology such as virtual reality and animation.

A well-crafted model not only gives life to a concept in a 3D, touchable and visual form but can be an amazing selling point for your design when done well and thoughtfully.

Let’s get started with today’s tips. I’ve compiled 5 important model making tips for architecture students that will boost your model making quality and hopefully also save you time when crafting.

In my first year studying architecture, I was naive in the sense that when I had designed something, I would think that it was final. The problem with architecture is that a design will never be completed. Every great architect will tell you that they have never actually produced a “perfect” design or drawing set, they simply get it to a point where it’s GOOD ENOUGH and move on. The reason behind this is because they could spend decades refining a scheme and making changes, idealising perfection but never being able to achieve it.

It is extremely important to refine and refine and refine, but understanding this is to realise that you should be smashing out small, drafty models before even thinking about making the final presentation model. Design is iterative and requires change. The more drafty your models are and the less time you spend making them, the easier it is to implement changes that will improve your design. Saying that, it gets to a point where you need to put the drafts away and build a final model. This is where time management becomes extremely important for an architect or architecture student. Schedule your time accordingly and this shouldn’t be an issue.

What information is necessary and what information isn’t?

Sometimes we can get carried away with overloading our models with these aesthetic features, but I assure you 95% of the time you are stripping away the aesthetic of the design when you are adding other information such as trees and hills. It’s way more important to keep your models clean, readable and informative than to have them colourful and overly decorative.

You can be metaphoric as well to display useful information. I’ve used pins, or skewers, or dead tree ends spray painted black, or toothpicks to represent trees and I guarantee 9 times out of 10 teachers will prefer this over the fake train-model making kit trees. Why? Because architecture is supposed to be metaphoric. The green trees stray the viewers attention away from what’s important, your design.
