When using a ruler for model making, like stated in the '70 hacks' info pack, use a metal ruler rather than a plastic one. As suggested by my tutor, invest in a metal safety ruler with a finger guard. It has saved my fingers many times from getting cuts while trying to do quick last minute work (which I know i shouldn't do). The metal safety ruler has a metal guard for your fingers and a rubber grip on the underside to prevent slipping. You can also get them at different lengths, I've seen them at 30 cm, 45 cm and 60 cm. Hope this helps!
