Hey guys, welcome to the episode today I’m super pumped to get into this and we’re interviewing Henrik Boshoff. He’s a student from Queensland University of technologies. That’s the QUT in Australia. Hendrik is a really knowledgeable guy and I really enjoyed this interview, despite me not being in my normal energy because I was extremely tired when I did the interview. However, despite that, he’s got a lot of great knowledge he’s gonna share with you. Let me just tell you a little bit about him. Hendrik Bosch is a business development manager at CAD International. So he’s worked his way up. He’s still an honest student in university, but he’s working for cat International. He’s working with arch line.xp, which is another software company in Australia, and they’ve got their own software so it’s worth checking that out. Also, he’s got a podcast at the moment a kitchen and bathroom design podcasts where he’s interviewed a bunch of people from the KVD which is the kitchen Bathroom design Institute, which is something in Australia. And so he’s got a lot of great advice to share with you guys. And if you guys stick around to the end, I do ask him some of his biggest takeaways from interviewing some of the biggest and most successful designers in Australia. Today I am joined here by Hendrik Boshoff from Queensland, Australia. How you doing Hendrik?

I’m doing great. Thanks for having me on the show.

No problem. That’s good. So yeah, thanks for joining me today. I’m really excited for this conversation actually. So why don’t you start off by telling us a bit bit about yourself and kind of who you are and where you are in terms of your education?

Hendrik  2:20 

Yeah, sure. So I originally moved to Australia about 10 years ago. So I’ve been here for 10 years. I studied originally at a different uni. So I’m studying now at the Queensland University of Technology here in Brisbane. And for several, probably several years, I struggled to get work. You know how difficult it is. But I eventually found this really great opportunity with CAD International, which is one of the major software resellers in Australia. So I’ve been fortunate enough to currently be working on bringing a new interior and kitchen and bathroom design software, also architecture. It’s called arch line XP. So I’m working in the business development side of building the company and getting clients getting the word out about our software, working with businesses and different partners and such.

That’s awesome. So yeah, you’ve obviously got a lot going on. But before we do get into kind of your work life as a business development manager at Academy International, and it also the interviews you do with the Australian designers with the KB di, could you first tell us kind of what it’s like studying your honors degree and how it’s any different to studying your bachelor’s?

Hendrik  3:49 

Okay, well, bachelor’s is kind of I’d say it’s a bit of an easier ride because in my first few years Like, I didn’t really take anything that’s that seriously, you know, like, they stopped everything quite easily and they kind of try to ease into the course. So like, the first few things you do are just kind of up in the sky. Yeah, in other words, but the later you get down the track, you know, they’re, the more skills you need to learn to actually get yourself into the industry. Because there’s a lot of skills that they don’t necessarily teach at university that are actually vital when you’re in the workforce. So, I mean, it’s really, it’s really a process of learning. It’s, it’s a long process of learning, and it’s definitely difficult. You know, like, they asked you to throw together a whole multi story building in a matter of a few weeks. So yeah, it can definitely be difficult and there’s a lot of learning involved.

Yeah, that’s good. Would you mind getting into a guess a bit of the structure of degree. So do you still have the same number of classes as your bachelor’s? Or is there any more or less flexibility? I guess, in the work you choose to do, as opposed to the previous years?

Hendrik  5:11 

Yeah. So the work seems to be going more towards like construction, like understanding the construction of how the building is actually going up. At ki T, I found that, like they courses are, I think they have kind of a good balance between theoretical and technical. And so yeah, when you start off the structures, more conceptual, more, I guess you could say up in the sky, but sort of now the courses are definitely very collaborative. So you’re going to have to get used to working in a team of people and being able to work well with others. Because if you don’t, you’re gonna you’re gonna have a very hard time. Hmm, yeah, I agree.

I guess that’s the same with you. bachelors as well. But even more so in your honors, definitely. And so I guess what kind of time like what kind of time requirements are expected of you each week? Is the workload a whole lot more than the previous years is like just an exponential step up, I guess.

Hendrik  6:16 

Yeah. So it’s, it’s definitely a step up in your honors. Like you’re marked much more harshly than in previous years, at least in my experience. So yeah, I mean, it’s, it’s, it’s quite different. It’s a bit more difficult.

Kyle  6:34 

Yeah, definitely. And how do you find it balancing working for cat international while studying? Like, are there any noticeable strategies I guess you use to manage your time or is it just a matter of working super hard and working heaps of late nights?

Hendrik  6:48 

Right? Okay. Well, here’s the thing if you’re, if you don’t manage your time, and you’re like, it’s not about working as hard as you can That’s a problem most people make, they think it’s cool to sit in studio and work your butt off and to be, you know, tired The next day, but what most people are doing is not necessarily the right thing. And I think if you if you want to succeed in architecture school and pretty much anywhere in life, really, you have to, what I do is I have a huge, I guess, poster calendar in my room, and I kind of mock my days off with sticky notes. And I try to get a pretty good idea of my courses. And my, I guess, my work structure, and that kind of helps me to plan ahead. And also when you’re planning ahead, like it’s good to leave some time for things that are going to go wrong. Because more than likely, something’s going to go wrong. So it’s good to it’s good to plan for that. Yeah, I’m actually at the moment because I plan to, I was actually going to do student exchange. But I stopped, I decided not to do that because of my the work I’m doing at the moment. So I had to choose between that and the work I’m doing. So I’m actually on a break of a few months. And then I’m getting back into full time study load soon.

And so I just got to clarify you in, I guess, your fourth or fifth year then.

Hendrik  8:27 

So I’m in my honors year, my fourth year.

Kyle  8:30 

Okay, gotcha. I think I might be a little bit different here in essay, because you’ve got the three year bachelor program, which I’m sure you’ve got there as well. And then honors i think is a two year course. So you’ve got the fourth and fifth year. Is that the same over there in Queensland, or is it just that

Hendrik  8:48 

So here it’s a bit different, it’s actually just a year for honors and I think that’s only a cutie like not a lot of places actually offer honors. So for me, because I transferred it might be a little bit different. But basically we do this is actually the last year that the master’s degree is one year. This switching into two degrees. Oh, okay. Sorry. Two years. Yeah. So yeah, for me, it’s one year honors and then another year masters.

That’s cool. And so I guess then for someone who wants to do some casual part time work while studying in their later years of architecture, what advice would you have for someone to be able to manage that successfully?

Hendrik  9:31 

Okay, well, so the first thing about getting into the workforce is you just need to start with something, right? Whether that’s whether you’re bartending somewhere or you’re a waiter somewhere, whatever it is, you need to put that into your resume because it shows that you’ve actually worked somewhere and it kind of shows that you have some skills at least. So I’d say that’s a good way to start off because if you’re expecting to work in a huge firm, straight out of university, I think it’s going to be extremely difficult. And a lot of the designers I’ve actually been interviewing, they’ve told me, you know, cities are kind of a difficult way to go, when it comes to looking for work. So either you have to go for small firms, and try to build relationships with people. And be persistent. So after your first few times, you’re gonna start noticing that a lot of people are gonna say no, but if you just keep persisting through it, you’ll eventually be successful. And the thing is, there’s a lot of other ways to build up your experience. So it doesn’t necessarily have to be at an architecture firm. It could be at a drafting company. It could be at a kitchen and bathroom design company, because that all these places they saw I’m more open to accepting people. So there’s a lot of different ways you can actually build up your experience.

Yeah, I find it’s like having that supply and demand. When you’re finishing your degree, there’s gonna be hundreds of students going for the same architectural jobs. But yeah, if you’re going out to a kitchen and design company, they might get two or three resumes where you’ve got a much better chance of actually getting a job then and just getting your foot in the door.

Hendrik  11:27 

It’s one of those niche markets like you got to look at what everyone else isn’t doing. Because, you know, you’re gonna end up like everyone else if you do what everyone is doing.

Kyle  11:36 

Exactly. Yep. Hundred percent. So I guess moving on to the next question is looking back over your previous years, I guess what has been the most difficult or one of the most challenging things about architecture school

Hendrik  11:50 

writes, um, so for me, I had I had quite a difficult experience moving to Australia because was when we were here, my dad actually lost his job. And then they decided to move back to South Africa. So I kind of decided to stick it out in Australia. And that was extremely difficult for me. Because I was basically relying on student loans and like a few dollars to try and get by. And then also the fact that I was trying to balance my study load with, you know, trying to figure out how I was going to pay my rent for eight weeks. So that was extremely difficult. And also, being in the course you know, trying to try to manage your study load trying to get ahead. You know, all the pressure that they put on you, they sort of make you believe, like you’re, you know, they kind of wipe you out in your critiques like they have no mercy. So, I think over time, the way for me To overcome these things was to build confidence in myself. And in my critiques to understand that design is subjective. So if your tutor is making you believe that, you know, your design is crappy, you know, go do it over five more times, you know, they’re not necessarily right. And a critique is actually an opportunity that you get to present your idea. And maybe help people come to your side of the fence and help them understand how your design actually works. So I think it’s, it’s building that self confidence in yourself. Also, don’t be egotistical. Because in that way, you know, you think if you think you know, everything you’re never gonna learn, and you’re pushing people away from you. So, I mean, those are the main tips I would give someone.

Yeah, that’s great advice and the fact that you’ve been through adversity I guess your adversities are what are going to make you stand What makes you successful over? Not over other students, but just giving you that edge? I guess? Yeah, that’s really cool. Coming to the completion of your degree. Can you tell us a bit about your plans for after you graduate?

Hendrik  14:14 

Yes. So I have plans for like the next more or less the long term. And I’m still working in the short term as to how exactly I want to get there. But the thing is, you don’t necessarily have to have everything figured out, you know, point by point. It’s sort of like going along and just having a vision for what you want to do. So for me, I’m looking at having my own sort of architecture property development company in maybe five or 10 years. So I’m, I’m kind of like a jack of all trades. You could say like, I’m Interested in a lot of things. So I really love design. And I love seeing how a building goes up. And you know what sort of things you can do to make it more livable for people. And then on the other hand, I’m I’m also in the software industries for I’m really passionate about this product that I’m bringing into the market because it’s sort of something completely new. And I want to build this company up to be successful, and I want to help small businesses and sole traders and all of that. But then, in the long term, I want to have my own company, that’s kind of what I’m working towards.

I love that idea that having a long term goal and then the short term isn’t as important because it’s those kind of just decisions. If you’re working hard and you’ve got that vision in mind of the long term, then you’re going to be able to make guess the right choices in the right time in that short term process. So saying that then, I guess Could you start tell us a little bit more about your job at CAD international and I guess a general idea of what you do on a day to day basis.

Okay, so my job is essentially being stressed

Kyle  16:15 

out. That’s fun.

Hendrik  16:18 

Yeah, it’s, I mean, it’s very stressful. You can imagine starting a business, essentially by yourself. Obviously, I’ve had international support, but it’s it’s pretty difficult starting a business. So my, my job role, I guess, official job role is business development, and marketing and sales. So basically, what I do is I’ve I created our website, I do online advertising, Facebook ads, YouTube ads, tutorial videos, you know, social media, building relationships. with our partners, building relationships with clients, email campaigns, so all of that stuff,

The list goes on. That’s awesome. But having Well, those skills in particular, definitely going to be super helpful. Not just for CAD International, but then as well later on in life when you are running your own stuff when you are doing your, I guess your long term idea there. And that is quite a unique job as well, I guess. So. How do you think working part time has helped you as a student and as a person going into the world of architecture?

Hendrik  17:38 

Well, the thing is, it’s important not to try to close yourself into a box and think I’m an architecture students, so I should do things that architects do. I think it’s important nowadays, to think outside of the box and to try acquire as many skills as you can That could be useful for you. So I mean, in my in my job though, a few things that, you know, the few skills other than all the technical stuff I’m learning is to be able to deal with failure and rejection, because I go through that on a daily basis, like, you know, with different customers with different things not working out, like I expected, and being able to not take that personally and be being able to persevere in that. So I’d say that’s a really good skill that I’ve been able to learn so far.

Yeah, I love that. And how did you get the job? Cat international?

Hendrik  18:43 

It was actually quite a long process. Um, I was getting pretty desperate for work at one point, and so I decided, you know what, screw it. I’m gonna start handing out my resumes everywhere. Hmm. So it’s initially started at a bartender job, you know, like I was able to pick up a few skills here and there. And then over time, being rejected by so many people I was able to figure out, you know, what are they looking for? What are the skills that I need to be able to show them? So yeah, I was overtime, I was able to pick up the different skills and yeah, and eventually, after handing out like, you know, probably close to 100 resumes. Just everywhere, literally at the mall, I would mock out the, you know, the different stores happen to this one to this one. Yeah, and then out of nowhere, I got an email from them saying that they were looking for someone and you know, they were asking me a few questions about marketing and this and that, and because I already have been through that experience, And I’d already have been part of a few other, like a member of a few other organizations like the AIA Urban Development Institute, the Housing Association industry and all that. I was sort of able to pick up a pretty good idea of the market, you know, the property industry, the software industry, and you know, where everything is sort of heading. So I think that’s probably the thing that stood out to them the most,

I guess the idea there is that it wasn’t easy to get that first job. And yeah, learning all those different skills along the way. It’s, you know, a progressive thing. It didn’t just happen overnight. So I think that’s really, really, really cool. And I was looking at the website, actually, and you guys are advocates for a lot of different software companies and programs. And can I ask as a student yourself, what has been some of the most useful and predominant software that you use as as your yourself as a student?

Hendrik  21:00 

Okay, hopefully this doesn’t make all the big software companies angry. So the thing in my experience is I was basically studying the inside, inside out. He said, basically the full extent of the program Revit, which is what currently in Revit is good for. You have to it takes a long time to actually learn the program properly. And it’s very, very complicated in different aspects. I mean, there’s different software like SketchUp it’s simple and easy, but then again, it doesn’t have the documentation tools. And then there’s all kicad which, you know, a few people use it’s definitely pretty good all rounder but then again, a lot of these programs there’s a problem of needing which tools do you actually need, and which tools are you probably never going to use. So in my experience, arch line has been pretty damn good at small residential scale architecture. So it’s pretty good, you know, if you’re designing a house, doing an interior fit out, and you want to be able to document that, and do all the practical technical stuff. So in that regard, Arslan is pretty good. If you’re going to design a huge building, and you know, you need all your BIM stuff in place, then it would be well worth learning Reddit. It takes a lot of time to actually learn it. So that’s the only that’s the only con i guess

i want to talk about. Like moving on. I want to talk about the interviews from that you did I guess with the beat kbd kitchen and bathroom design Institute, I believe. Could you tell us a bit more about the series Have interviews you guys have done?

Hendrik  23:01 

Yeah. Okay, so I’ve done about six or seven interviews so far with top designers in the industry. Like de hench, sorry, di Henschel, Lisa, Kitchen Gallery. All boardroom gear. From what I can remember, you can check it out on our podcast, but there’s a few.

Awesome. I’ll put a link to that as well. What do you think was some of the most important things you learned from doing those interviews and talking to these professionals in the kitchen and bathroom design? Kind of weld?

Hendrik  23:55 

Okay, if I cuz I have to probably keep it short. The main things they they were really talking to me about that seemed to help them all in their business starting their own business is because a few things. First of all, if you’re starting your own design business, it’s all about mindset. So it’s about having a vision for yourself and being able to execute, even though you might have a few failures in the beginning, and even though things are very difficult at the start. It’s sort of like a graph. It’s extremely difficult at the beginning, and it’s hard to overcome all those obstacles, but eventually, like it sort of gets easier. So that’s the one thing they talked to me about. And also, the other thing has to do this is quite a significant thing that I think a lot of people have trouble with, especially in the architecture industry is eager I’m being egotistical. And being a horrible person. I’m not saying everyone’s like that. But I’m saying that that’s definitely a problem in the industry that I can see from the logical operations. And the thing that I’ve seen about all day businesses is the way that they work. They’re very, very collaborative, and cooperative. And they actually provide immense value to their customers, because of the way that they work with them. They’re not focused on Oh, what’s going to make me look good and make my company look good. They’re actually thinking about taking the client through the process. And in the end, it’s all about the client. It’s not about how important you think you are, how many cocktails, cocktail parties you attend, how you dress. In the end, none of these things matters. And it’s all a mental thing. Like it’s all Being able to get paused, you’re eager to be actually to actually be able to succeed. Because that’s the I think that’s the one thing that holds, that holds people back. Because that’s, you know, they see in, in the media, or it’s cool to be a badass or a bad boy and, you know, to treat other people badly and to lie and to manipulate people. And I think that’s completely the wrong way to go.

Yeah, I agree completely. And, yeah, the media is definitely not helping with that. So, um, we are running out of time, but I’ve got a couple more questions for you. If you could give one piece of advice to some architecture students out there to help them succeed, what would it be?

Hendrik  26:43 

Look it would be to do something that you’re passionate about. So if you find that architecture is not for you, it’s perfectly okay to say you know, maybe this is not for me, maybe I should go try something else. But if you’re if you’re actually passionate about architecture and it’s something you see yourself doing. I think it’s worth to, to have belief in yourself and to surround yourself with the right people, people who actually support you. So, you know, if you’re in an environment where people are backstabbing you and people not actually supporting you put yourself out there and try to connect with the right people. Yeah,

She was originally from Hong Kong and she’s moved over to Sydney a couple of years ago. And she’s gonna be sharing some some of her experiences from a first week of architecture school. And this is going to be amazing. I’m just so pumped about this interview, because Jeannie is really really knowledgeable. She’s really knows what she’s talking about. And the fact is, she’s just come out of university. Sorry, she’s just come into university and this is something I always tried to reflect back on. You know, being in my first year again, being in my first week, and it’s hard for me to remember back to that to give you guys advice. So instead, Jeannie is going to share that advice with you because she’s just been through it. She’s in a third week now. And she really really does know what she’s talking about and she’s really ambitious as well which is surely gonna rub off on you guys like by watching this video you’re going to be more ambitious yourself and I can see that happening. Even if you’re not going into your first week of architecture school, and you’re already in your third year or fourth year, it doesn’t matter. This video is going to be super helpful for you. Thank you, Kyle. Thanks for having me. How are you?

Yeah, I’m doing well. Thank you. That’s all right. I’m super happy you decided to join me today. So why don’t you start off by telling us a bit about yourself.

I’m an international student. I’m not originally from Sydney. I’m actually from Hong Kong. And I just started my first year of architecture school. And actually, today is going to be my like the start of my third week, so very early in the game. But yeah, so far, it’s been definitely challenging, a lot of work but you know, it’s, you know, it’s expected you kind of know what you’re getting into if you’re going to get into architecture, presumably. Previously, before I started architecture here, I went through like the foundation course that you NSW and it’s basically like a direct pathway from kind of like a high school. level of education into universities. So that’s kind of how I got here. Um, and yeah, so yeah, I guess outside of, you know, school in architecture, I got to Australia at the end of 2018. And kind of finished high school there decided, you know, like, I want to move countries and I want to pursue. I knew I wanted to pursue architecture in high school, and I decided to come to Australia to do that. So around what year did you decide on architecture? It was pretty much Okay, so long story short, as I progressed throughout secondary, a secondary school, it was pretty much you know, the typical like science math that kind of, like subjects and yeah, I was not going to spend my life kind of getting into careers. So pretty much I switch gears and went into design, like switch programs in terms of schooling and learning to like a kind of more Arts and Design but again, very, like generic, nothing. really specialize. But it was pretty much further on, I developed a kind of liking towards architecture and kind of building and I guess creating models because I had the opportunity to do like a little like House Renovation from my apartment in Hong Kong, which was really fun. That was a stir. Yeah, so that was kind of my first taster into kind of like the built environment. And also along the way, I was really lucky to meet some very special people also in the field that kind of influenced me and opened my mind up about the world of architecture.

Very cool. Um, let’s try thinking back to what it’s like in my first week of architecture school again, and I tried putting myself in those shoes, I guess, to kind of remember how nervous I was and to give some advice to students going through that. Let them have like a smooth first week, and just completing your first week. It’ll be much easier I guess, for you to recall. The good and bad things that happened. Would you mind sharing with us kind of what your experience was in your first week of architecture school?

Jeannie 5:05
Yeah, absolutely. So, um, in terms of things that I feel like other architecture students should be aware of, before they get into, you know, the first couple weeks is, things move very fast, very, very fast. And you have to kind of keep your wits about you. Make sure you’re on top of everything, everything outside of your uni life is organized, especially if you’re trying to work and you know, kind of things like that, because I’m doing the same. So organization is really key. And also kind of understand that I don’t know how it is with other programs, but with us, it’s quite like you’re thrown in the deep end really, with like, our first studio project is to design stairs with SketchUp. And you have to do a lot of figuring things out for yourself outside of, you know, your uni lectures or tutorials. So in saying that the best thing are the best result. I’m speaking to some of my other friends also in the same, same degree, they the ones that do better are typically the ones that do experiment outside of, you know what’s required in the brief that unit gives you. Because they just have so much more experience, you know, working with the different programs that are so novel to us. So, yeah, making sure that you’re expanding your knowledge and teaching yourself things outside of the course. It’s so important at this stage as well.

Yeah, I definitely agree with that. Were you nervous at all during your first week?

Jeannie 6:35
Not really, I’m not really nervous. Person unless like, I’m put on the spot about something I have no idea about. I wasn’t really nervous, but it was definitely a little bit of apprehension, because like, obviously, something you’ve never done before. So you’re kind of more alert, like kind of trying to take everything in and keeping on top of everything. But it wasn’t really nerves for me.

Yeah, Joseph. The complete other end of that I was, I was, yeah, I was a wreck. And yeah, but really in the end, there is nothing to be nervous about, as you were saying.

Jeannie 7:11
I guess not nervous, but um, some, like some experiences I’ve had also my first week is there have been some people that has dropped out already. Yeah. So obviously there’s, you know, such a big cohort, there’s gonna be lots of different people. But I feel like, obviously, do your research and everything before we get into architecture. But once you like, kind of figure out you’re not sure about it. I think it’s so much better to drop out early instead of later. Once you if it so happens that you figure out you know, this isn’t what you want to do. It’s better to do that early. It’s just yeah.

Yeah, I agree with that as well. So I’m in my third year now, and there are some students who have been saying they’re going to drop out since the first year, and I’ve kind of just stuck to it and you can see how miserable it’s making them and they feel like they’re gotta finish their degree because they’ve started and I’ve got to finish when I started. But yeah, you can just tell it’s not really gonna be the best option for them.

Jeannie 8:11
Like in the industry, you’re going against people, like people like you, for example, you’re obviously very passionate about what you’re doing. Oh, yeah, it’s not a good idea to stay in something just for the sake of it, because you’re not going to be competitive.

Kyle 8:26
But saying that there’s always a way to build up the passion for it. And to get to that motivation level, I guess, so that you are one of those students who are the competitive ones in the industry, I guess. So could you run us through what subjects you have? like you’d have, I guess, three or four classes, and could you tell us what they are?

Jeannie 8:46
Yeah. So right now, cuz you and I tell us a little bit different. We do trimesters. So I’m in my first trimester, and we do three courses. So that we have a studio class like Do like sort of workshop? Yeah, it’s like a it’s different from like a classroom environment. And then we have a communications course. So that’s to do with kind of learning, you know, like Photoshop and Illustrator, that kind of stuff to get your ideas that you’re coming up with it studio across, like, that’s what that class is named for. And then there’s an intro and enabling course class. So, that’s, it’s more academic, it’s like a research based course. Basically, all of us are assigned a specific house that that has been significant in the world of architecture and we do the whole tournament’s like to research that house and to later on to create renders and models of that house. So yes, it’s very different all three classes, but all of them happen simultaneously.

Yeah, I was gonna say, do you think they all kind of come together so that when you’re working on one, what you’ve learned, and one of them’s gonna come? To complement the other ones,

Jeannie 10:01
yeah, absolutely, there’s so much um, transferable skills as you’re going, you know, through the motions through your courses. And I’m pretty sure all other things are the same. I can see from you and SW that their course, or the way that you sign up for the courses, each term is designed in a way that you take on, you know, the foundational skills on to the next project and the next one and so forth.

Yeah, definitely. That’s the way it goes, I guess. And so how many how many times? So how many hours I guess in a week, are you required to be at uni?

Jeannie 10:36
One? Yeah, this is this is an interesting thing that I thought when I first started because with the timetable, it looks really sparse. So my uni days are on Monday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, so only three days. My Monday is my longest day because studio goes for like five hours, but it’s pretty, you know, relaxing. Everyone’s just doing their own thing. And then on Tuesday and Thursday, it’s pretty much like an average of three hours at uni. So it doesn’t look a lot. But you are expected to do the bulk of your work outside of those classes. So having said that your timetable might, you know, you might think like, oh, pretty chill, like, nothing’s gonna really get too stressful, but it does a little bit if you don’t manage your time well outside.

Definitely. Yeah, I think that’s what gets a lot of people that like, oh, buddy got seven or eight hours at uni this week. And then you gotta get home and you’ve just got tons and tons of homework you need to do, I guess, but definitely, it’s important to manage your time and especially because you’ve got all these bigger projects towards the end of the semester. And so what you’re required to put in a certain amount of hours each week, they all build up to this final project, I guess.

Yeah. Yeah, that’s exactly it.

Kyle 11:54
So what are some of the things you did coming up to the semester to prepare for it if you did anything at all?

Jeannie 12:00
Um, well, pretty much. There wasn’t really much like prescribed things to do from the university to prepare, but like, I guess, to foster some of my interests in terms of architecture, because like one of my big, audacious goals in the future is to eventually, you know, get on to being licensed and, you know, start my own practice. So that’s kind of angle I’m coming from. So I have a lot of interests outside of architecture school in terms of like the business end of, you know, sort of like the like in construction or interior design, like any of those things. And the way I like to educate myself is to watch YouTube channels. There’s so many out there, there’s so many great people with so much knowledge to share. And that’s kind of how I’ve been setting up kind of my mindset for before I head into architecture school, so unique for me, that’s where I obtained you know, the nuts and The skills outside of that there’s so much that I’m not going to get here that I need to educate myself and expose myself to outside of school. So that’s, yeah. So that’s what I’ve been doing before coming into architecture.

Yeah, I think that’s awesome that you’ve just set up some goals and using those goals to kind of push you towards achieving them, if that makes sense. And then kind of what you were saying is that you really need to learn these skills on the side have a vision of the future, it’s definitely going to help pull you towards that. I guess that’s kind of why I’m doing that successful. He soon know that to teach students those things that you won’t learn at university, but pretty much the most important things that will set you apart from other students. So did you have an orientation day?

Jeannie 13:47
We did we had a week, but in a week, it’s not exactly tailored towards you know, your specific faculty. Like, oh, sorry, I’m talking about the weekend. General is lots of fun activities just to get people meeting each other. But in terms of like degrees specific faculty specific events, they did have a big welcoming at the beginning for all the undergraduate students, which, which was really fun to hear from the dean. Yeah, so it’s like a personalized sort of welcome to everyone. And then something really good that we also have here at the university is a peer mentoring sort of group, or it’s basically students from like, the higher years they kind of, you know, take the first years under their wing and you know, you have any issues or problems in terms of workload, are you you’re not sure how to interpret a brief that kind of thing. You can always go to them for advice, which I think is really cool.

Yeah, that’s a really good resource to have. Um, so how did you find it meeting new people? And I guess, do you have any advice for someone who doesn’t know anyone going into uni with them, and how they could meet some new friends because that’s, I feel like something a lot of people We struggle with something that scares a lot of people.

Jeannie 15:02
Yeah, that’s such a great question. Um, to be honest, I’m in the same position as well, because, as I said, I’m not from Sydney, a lot of, you know, some of the other people that have come to us who like they, they know their friends from high school. And, you know, they have kind of like that base core group of people I know, to other people in my degree, like as an A good rapport. Because I did my foundation studies with them. But you know, obviously, I’m aiming to expand that sort of network as I go along. So my sort of tips is to engage with engage with your peers like in studios, because studios are so free flowing. It’s not like a classroom where you’d be quiet listen to the teacher, you’re everyone’s collaborating, working on their own projects. You know, ask the person next to you like oh, what do you think about this? Like, do you have any, you know, like, does does this part of the model makes sense to you Kind of like me reaching out to you the other day when I was doing my project, I was really grateful to get some, you know, feedback. So just little things like that, you know, reaching out to different people seeing what they think about your work. That’s always a great way. A great place to start in terms of building relationship.

Yeah, completely agree. And I guess I want to talk about as well I guess something else people are scared of is getting lost that can because I know it’s not. It doesn’t seem like a big thing. But it really is if you do rocking up to uni campus and you got no idea where you’re going. It can be quite intimidating, I guess. So. What was it like getting around your campus and as someone from Hong Kong as well, I guess you wouldn’t really know, Sydney all that well yet. Even though you’ve been here for a couple of years already, but did you have any troubles with getting around campus? Um,

Jeannie 16:51
well, yes. It’s a huge campus here in in Kensington, so it’s definitely cool to kind of do get acquainted with where your classes are going to be before your turn starts before your first class, that’s always a good idea. You know, you need such a big place, everyone’s really welcoming. There’s nothing wrong with you know, rocking out the weekend or two before, you know your classes start just to you know, suss out where your classes are going to be. That’s always a good idea. That’s kind of some of the classes I didn’t have issues finding because I already kind of need the capsule a bit from my foundation studies here. But, you know, there were definitely other studios, like for example, the built environment building we have here I haven’t really been to, so yeah, I definitely like showed up during a week and, you know, kind of found the classrooms for myself beforehand.

Yeah, that’s great advice. Cuz I remember my first couple of weeks, I got super lost, I had no idea where I was going. And the way I got around that, I guess, was just by talking around until go finding a group of students who I’d seen in my orientation day and just Make the conversation and say, I have no idea where I’m going, can you help me out, and everyone’s super understanding and they all like everyone at the campus wants to help you out. So I guess that’s a good piece of advice just to ask around. And as you were saying before, just talk to people and they’ll be happy to help you.

I just want to add on a little bit, in terms of organizing yourself before, before the term starts. As I kind of touched on earlier, because the term starts so fast, once you get into it, the last thing you want is to be stressed out by you know, random mishaps, not knowing where you’re going, I get the most the way to be the most successful as a student at university is just to kind of mitigate all those stresses outside of you know, what you already have to do. Like, that’s just really being kind to yourself, and, you know, helping yourself along and I really encourage everyone to kind of, you know, think about ways that they could just minimize stress, like extra stress.

Definitely. Yeah, that’s great advice. All right. So I do want to hit you up with a bit of a fire on here. So just a couple of short questions with short answers, I guess. So, do you have a favorite architect?

Yes, I’m really typical answer, I guess for females, but it’s gonna be saw.

Yeah. Do you have a favorite building? Would it be

a favorite building? I did a lot of research and looking into the Hadar Ali and building the one with like this this like this loop. That’s a really beautiful one that I always that always comes up when someone asked me about my favorite building. Another good one is the Do you know about it’s actually the one you posted up on Instagram that really iconic one in Hong Kong. You know,

I knew exactly Really what that was, as soon as I saw it’s such an iconic shape on unlike the Hong Kong skyline. That was a really a really good one as well that I’ve personally been to. Yeah, so those are the two that you know comes up when you asked me that question.

Awesome. And I guess I don’t know if you’ve read many architecture books. Otherwise, would you have I guess a favorite architecture book or maybe a favorite YouTube channel that helps you with your architecture

Jeannie 20:29
actually do promote. Okay. So for the books, there’s a there’s a guy called Eric rain. I hope I’m saying this right Eric rain hopes and, and he, you know, he kind of does this workshop called 30 by 40. Like 30 x 40. He has a really great work. He’s good on his YouTube channel. His videos super important to have super, like cinematic it’s great editing. He’s a great reason. source that I always go to. And he also has two books of volume one and Volume Two called architect entrepreneur, which I owned and I have read, and they are awesome, like, point of reference to kind of, you know, get your bearings, right again, understand the lay of the land when it comes to the architecture industry. And also, he tailors his information a bit more to those entrepreneurs out there that do want to eventually start their own thing. So, really recommend those books for you know, that particular niche of people. Your book that I have read the how to how to ace any project in architecture school, that was a resource that I used before I started, you know, I started my program, a lot of great concepts in there, you know, sharpening your pencils, that’s one that’s highlighted, the minus five plus 50 rule. That’s all that’s all. So some, some really, really good advice in there. I do implement YouTube channels. There’s a woman called Karen bond and interior designer. She’s from Vancouver. And she owns this company called the house of Bonn. Super inspirational. One of my biggest inspirations as a woman in the industry. She has a great channel, I recommend everyone to check her out. She’s super authentic, genuine, she doesn’t. She’s She’s really really warm and like a friendly person. And as a female, you know, you’re kind of programmed to think that all to make it in business or to make it you know, to be successful. You need an air of like, you know, I don’t know, I mean, you get like kind of like, kind of like a Devil Wears Prada sort of vibe, but not like that. And I find that really refreshing from her. Not to mention her work is just genuinely great and just speaks for itself. So yeah, there’s some Those are some people that I do recommend checking out.

Yeah, I managed to snag it like no one else. Yeah, but yes, that’s pretty much where I post my work and you know update some some things I’m doing for uni or for architecture.

Yeah. No, that’s all good. Um, you know, we’ve already covered off on some really good advice in this video. But another thing that I do want to touch on that is so important is Don’t forget to develop your soft skills, especially if you want to be successful because at the end of the day architecture, you know, learning the programs and all that that’s great to have those, you know, skills in your arsenal. But really, what’s gonna, you know, push you up in your career is the ability to deal with people to deal with lots of different people, you know, in the industry, you’re often working with so many different groups, you know, you have your clients, your builders, have your project managers, so the ability to smoothly navigate between all of that is so important. So do exercise that.

And I think that’s awesome. I think you’ve really got a great mindset and you’re definitely ambitious and I think that’s a wonderful trait to have. What is going on guys? Today I’m joined by a student who’s not an architecture student, but he’s actually a college student who’s keen on studying architecture. His name is Daniel. He’s from Melbourne, Australia, and I’m going to be having a chat with him about preparing for architecture school and getting ready for it. So if you’re a high school student or a student looking to do architecture, I think this video is going to be extremely beneficial and helpful for you. How are you doing? Oh, I’m very fine. Thank you. So yeah, it’s a real pleasure to have you on the show. I do appreciate you taking the time out to chat with us about architecture. And originally, you’re from Malaysia. Is that correct? Yeah. Let’s go. You’re now studying in Melbourne, I believe. Would you mind telling me a bit more about yourself and where you are? In regards to your education? I’m currently in college. Yeah.

yeah, you told me you’re planning to go into architecture next year. Yep. Can I ask what inspired you to pursue architecture

Danial  1:59 

well Actually, before this, I didn’t really have the interest in architecture. Like when I was really young, I had an interest in it to become a doctor. Oh, yeah. So yeah. And well, eventually when I was like, around the age of nine, and around 10, then that’s where I’ve made up my mind that I want to study architecture. So, yeah, it’s actually partly inspired by you know, Legos. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it that played a very big role in what inspired me to become an Yeah. And to study architecture.

Common, quite a common way of getting into architecture playing with Legos as a child and building little blocks and stuff like this. I think I did a lot of that when I was a child as well. So definitely something common.

Yep, definitely something in common. Yeah, and I also I like, go on the internet. I look too many interesting like buildings and There’s one specific architect that actually really inspired me. Which is a BRK Ingles? Yeah, yeah. I love this like concept and methodology of planning buildings and how it’s like hybrid ism and all that. Yeah. It’s like it’s really out of the box. You know, it’s not just the design this specific reason behind the design and yeah, it’s really interesting.

I’ve got a feeling he’s gonna win the Pritzker Prize this year. So that’s kind of my that’s my that’s what I’m thinking for the future. Yep. He’s doing some crazy things.

Yeah. All these projects are like, it’s like something out of the ordinary. Yep, it’s another projects. Yeah.

Um, so you’ve been consider out. Like, you’re you’re set on doing architecture that since you were nine or 10. That’s quite a long time, I guess. So. Have you ever lost motivation to study architecture or you’ve come across some challenges? along that journey of kind of being inspired to study architecture for that long.

Danial  4:05 

Well, as the years go by, it does get stronger. You know? Like, yeah, we just like this. Not really my challenges yet, but I’m going to expect some from university. So, yeah,

go, I guess because you started architecture next year. Is there anything you’re doing at the moment to prepare for that?

Danial  4:25 

Well, I do like, some mini prototypes, like using labels and like I do some sketches of building ideas that I have in my mind. Hopefully, I can realize them in university. Or maybe Julia, and I do some slight reading on that as well. Yep. And researching some projects and see how the thing goes. Yeah. And apparently channel had happens to be one of the methods I’m doing and like we said from the That’s awesome. Yep.

That’s really good. So you said you’re doing some reading and stuff. Do you have any favorite architecture related books? Or Or is there a blog you follow or something like that?

Danial  5:08 

Um, mostly, it’s on Instagram. Yeah. So I follow like, many of the starchitects, as well as some notable architects on Instagram, and I came up with their projects as well as skyscraper pages and all that. Yeah. Then I have a interest in more like skyscrapers. In terms of like building types. Yeah.

Yeah, I think I’m kind of on that side as well, of the big commercial buildings or big residential buildings. Anyway, it’s just a lot more fun. But I guess once you actually get into architecture school, you do a lot about stuff in architecture school, but then when you get out of architecture school, that’s when you’re kind of just doing toilet details and the small residential buildings and stuff. But as you work up, you definitely get to work more on that

and it just progresses higher and higher. Yeah,

yeah, exactly. So come on. and preparing for architecture school. Is there anything that frightens you or scares you about it?

Danial  6:05 

Well, from what I’ve seen and written lots of architecture means it’s more to the project. Like, it’ll take you’ll you’ll need lots and lots of coffee. That’s what.

Kyle  6:18 

That’s what I’m doing right now. Yeah. Yeah, definitely lots of late nights and long days. So coffee is not a bad idea.

I’m expecting a lot of those. Yeah. Oh, yeah.

So actually, I was going back to the idea of kind of the starchitects and, and big buildings and stuff. I was just looking through Instagram page, and I saw your YouTube channel. Not despite your thing, but I saw that. You’ve been filming some holidays here in New York and stuff and you were filming a lot of Yeah, a lot of all this nice architecture. I saw you and I kinda want to know it. I’ve never really traveled myself. And it seems like it really opened you up to the world of architecture. So it’s Something you suggest other students do to go out and actually experience the architecture for themselves?

Danial  7:05 

Yes, I really do suggest that instead of looking at different pictures, you can go and visit those buildings in real life. So actually New York, the city itself played a very big role in inspiring me inspire me to say I get back. Typically, because of the skyscrapers and all the greats and their streets and avenues and how the people interconnect. Yeah. It really inspired me.

I don’t know. I think I think I saw like, you went to Chicago and something else like that. And there was also a building in Chicago. I was trying to think of it. Yeah, I think it’s the artwork where it’s like a little blob thing and it’s all silver. Yeah,

I’m actually like, I’m really, I’m a strong believer, I guess in in the fact that you should always be doing something on the side to gain more knowledge like outside of university outside of high school or college. So like, going out and experiencing the architecture for yourself, it’s definitely going to be good for you because you’re learning something that no one else is learning on the side. Yep. And it kind of helps you gain those skills that other students won’t have, which will make you more valuable in the industry, I guess. So. I think that’s really good you doing that.

Awesome. I’m gonna hit you up with a with a bit of a fire around here. Just a couple of quick questions, I guess. So who’s your favorite architect?

Danial  8:43 

As I’ve said before, it’s BRK Ingles at the moment. And the second I would say is Zaha Hadid. Yep. That’s like a whole different type of architecture. It’s all those fluid and illogical kind of shapes? Yeah. Yeah. And there’s also one that’s actually not an architect by the designer. His name is Thomas hitter with the design of the vessel in New York.

I haven’t seen I haven’t seen any of his work, but I’ll be sure to look that up.

Yep. Um, he, um, he’s not then he’s calling he calls himself a designer. Okay. But yeah, he designs buildings. And it’s kind of like, a methodology, methodology and approach is similar to the archangels. So yeah. As well as other architects such as Norman Foster and all that.

Yeah, you really? You really do love all the big buildings and oldest architecture? I guess you can call it.

Yeah, you can call me that.

Yeah, that’s awesome. So what would be your favorite building then? Would it be one of yarks work or would it be one of their hearts?

Danial  9:50 

I have like I don’t really have a particular building that I really love. But I guess like, the way the history or the like the stories that architects go to when they design and build a building. That’s what makes the building special. So that’s what I strongly believe, like, I do not really favor any buildings, but any skyscrapers that has those special technologies and stuff. Yeah, it really, really catches my eye. But it’s mostly skyscrapers. Yeah.

Yeah, that’s awesome. But you have a favorite architectural edit book. I know that you’re not like officially into your education yet. And you probably haven’t done a whole lot of reading. You’re only 17 years old, which I think it’s incredible that you’re already doing all this stuff on the side. But would you have a favorite architecture later book?

Danial  10:36 

And I am currently reading from space and order by Yeah, I’m currently reading that. So that’s like the buzz architecture book them really really well. So I would say it’s it’s actually quite helpful. Yeah.

I think that’s really good. Like, I really want to buy that book though. Cuz I don’t have it yet.

Is that a book you recommend to other students?

Danial  11:05 

And as an academic, as I’m not really an academic architecture student yet, but to get an insight in architecture? Yeah, sure. Why not? Just go and read. You won’t lose anything anyways. By the way, I’m since I’m from Malaysia, you know, the capital city Kuala Lumpur. Yep. Yep. Yep. There’s like the Petronas Twin Towers. Were just like the tallest in the world right now. Yeah. And currently, there’s like two more buildings under construction. Once recently completed, they call it the TR x 106.

Yeah, I’ve heard of that. I haven’t seen any photos or anything. But

it’s, um, it’s, it’s almost open. And there’s another one that’s really under construction now is the pnb 118. Okay, which is going to be like the second tallest building on earth. And yes,

I was gonna say Do you know how roughly roughly how total is I think because the Burj Khalifa is 666 meters. Yeah. Yeah, that’s insane.

Well, I’ll hit you up with the next question that I had, because I know that you’re not an architecture student. But I think you’re actually doing really well as a high school student. He hasn’t even started architects yet. So I want to ask you this question. What’s one piece of advice you would give to aspiring architecture students or people like yourself who are wanting to go into architecture? What’s one piece of advice you would give them to be successful?

I would say. Architecture – just follow your passion. That’s the important thing. So if you really are into architecture All those projects, all those hard works are about to go through. It won’t. Like it’ll hurt a bit, but it’ll be worth it. It’ll be worth it. Yeah. So just persevere through the way. And you’ll take the fruits of labor. This I mean, if you really have the passion, you know, seriously, you’ll you’ll feel like you really like it’s part of your, your future career, your future job. And all these things are going to is going to increase experience in the field. So that’s what I really recommend I get interested in those projects won’t really matter that much if you’re really there.

This is the third guests in a row in the last three days that I’ve interviewed so I’m super excited and super pumped about this. I’m now meeting with Chaim from Melbourne, Australia and he’s A third year architecture student like myself, except he’s got a bit of an edge on me because he’s already finished a two year deployment in building design, which I think is incredible. And he’s, he’s definitely ambitious. And he’s definitely motivated to do really well a bit of an insight into this episode, we’re going to be talking about how to enter and how to win architecture competitions, because he’s, um, he’s come recently come first placed in a kitchen design competition. And so we get in depth about that, we’ll be talking about late nights and how to manage stress and how to manage your time better, so that you don’t have to stay out past 11 o’clock at night, which I think is going to be super helpful for you guys. And also gonna be talking about our claims app idea for a an app for architects, which is pretty much where you scan, or take a photo of a building, and you scan that building, and it tells you all the relevant details about the materials and the schedule of the materials and it will tell you all the project information such as the team and when it was completed and all this kind of information, which I think it’s a great Great idea. And it’s definitely something to be excited about. And also want to get to know what you guys think about that, because he’s really trying to develop it forward to making it a real thing to happen. And on that note, and we’ll also be talking about how to manage a side hustle or a side hobby while in architecture school, because a lot of students think that they don’t have much time to work on something else while in architecture school. Except that’s just simply not true. And there’s so much time in the world that you can actually have a side hobby have a side passion, aside from architecture. So I think this episode’s gonna be super helpful. And I don’t want to waste your time anymore. So I really think we should just get straight into the interview with him. yeah, really good. Thank you. It’s an absolute pleasure to have you on the show. And for those listening who don’t really know who you are, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

So my name is Chaim. I’m a Third year design student at Swinburne University. And yeah, I’m just overall one of the happiest architecture student out there. You know, I love it. And I’m glad to be on this podcast and talk about architecture.

So you knew this question was coming but why architecture? What made you decide that you wanted to be an architect?

Chaim  3:25 

Right so I don’t have that classic story of you know, when I was a kid was don’t building things or drawing. It was more of like the dollar it really I’m so a lot of people would be like, I was probably 19. You know, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. And I went to Chris caslon. After the meeting, we discovered that our life building so I enrolled in a diploma Building and Construction style and that I really, really lost it but I want to warn you, that was more of the nitty gritty The details or to the overall picture. And that’s why I decided to transfer to a diploma building design, which I did for two years online. And I was That was amazing. I loved it, got to working on a few projects. And eventually I finished and went on to the bachelor

eautiful. Could you tell us a bit more about what that course was? And kind of like you said that was online. So you didn’t have to go anywhere for that, kind of what did that involve? So I was studying in LA at the time.

And I would basically spend the whole afternoon doing about four or five hours. The course was a it was called a diploma design. It was offered to what was the incorporated 10 an ounce tape digital. And so while there wasn’t any peer to peer contact and, you know, one on one consultations with the tutors, if he did, I found that it was it was a It was still really good, you know, they were really responsive, those have to call out every day to kind of buy them at the end that they were finished. So that was really good. And you know, you got to work at your own pace, and really take things as they can learn most of what I notice on YouTube, you know, putting on amazing tutorials and who’s great. Yeah, I feel like that’s one of the best ways to go about it. But so it was that course, a lot more like construction, detailing our kind of building as opposed to designing architecture. We didn’t do much of the building construction details. We started with the site analysis all the way through to construction, documentation and producing our renderings and models and it was really more the design side of things which I really enjoyed.

That would have given you a massive edge over other students as well. Who experiencing architecture for the first time as you’re moving into doing your university university degree? Is that something you recommend other students to take that path of doing a Diploma first before going to university?

Chaim  6:14 

so I would definitely recommend that although the way I went about it, I did two years completed and then started the bachelor right away and I had to complete the full bachelor. So, you know, although I did have two years extra studying, whereas some people do a diploma, let’s say, I know a lot of my meta unit started with a diploma and went straight into the third year or second year. So often another option which I found that they came into the cost a lot more with a lot better technical knowledge, and, you know, draft and capabilities. So their deployment definitely strong in that regard where, whereas the bachelor students were more like conceptual and more model making

So you actually reached out to me last week with an app idea for architects and I want to dig a bit deeper into this for my own curiosity. But also to help understand what other architecture students would think about this. So the idea is that you have an app on your phone. And that’s where you kind of take a photo of a building and it gives you access to the details and the project team and your year of completion. And also, I think material information, is that right?

Yeah.

yeah, could you tell us a bit more about what sparked this idea and the inspiration behind it?

Chaim  7:44 

Sure. So it was really a few years coming, you know, from when I started architecture all of a sudden, I’m sure people can relate all sudden you’re driving down the street and you just almost crashed at the hundred times. Just looking at thousand photos of buildings. So, you know, a few instances I would pull out on like look at the building block while I was some impressive cladding or other doors I was really, really cool. And I think to myself a lot, a lot of articles and we’ll look into them and see other projects for inspiration. And be actually lot to like, you know, find out more about the material, the materials used, the building components and the systems I’ve used and really get access to that information so I could use on my own projects, but I found that that was close to impossible. Yeah, but what can I do? People that dress you know, and 110 times the project would be featured. And then maybe at the End of lesson, half an hour research, how to come up with enough doctors That’s about it. So I thought, you know, it would be such a great service to architects and students alive. If you could, you know, snap a picture of a building, and automatically get access to building information such as the contract, the year of completion, that protect, as well as the relevant manufacturing details all there in your hand ready to use for future projects. And I have reached out a few afterwards to see to test its visibility. And it’s still on the, you know, the very early stages, particularly with people’s feedback and, you know, other people will be able to make this a reality and i think i think will be great for everybody.

Oh, yeah, I agree. And this leads me to think about how a lot of architecture students they think that they can only have kind of one thing to focus on at a time. And what I mean by this is that like, We think we’re so busy that we can’t have a side hustle or a hobby or a passion outside of architecture. So for students who are thinking like that, what would you say to them to change their minds and inspire them to gain more skills outside of architecture?

Well, I think your the professional, maybe the most you could do but what I could say is that it’s funny because one of my electives was actually entrepreneurship and opportunity. And I definitely recommend that as an elective, because I found from from when I started that unit, till now my mind’s been working differently now, I got one thing out of that unit is just turning like the problems that you had to like, I wish somebody would do something about it to like, maybe I could do something about it. And I find that even just thinking thinking like that could get you really far and, you know, create some amazing friends. us

that takes you back to when I was reading Rich Dad Poor Dad, I don’t know if you’ve read that book. It actually is such a good book, but it says it, I think it’s like, question, a statement closes the mind and the question opens it and like allows you to keep going. So I think that’s relating to what you’re saying there, which is just, you can do something about it, then. You know, you can because it’s like,

Who else who else will do it? If it’s not you. Exactly.

And because it’s the same idea, I guess, with getting a part time job, or like an iMac at an architecture firm or starting your own business or gaining skills that are gonna make you more valuable as an architect. And if you keep pursuing this app idea, if you end up making it or not, it doesn’t really matter, because you’re going to learn all of these skills along the way. And they’re gonna make you more valuable not just as an entrepreneur, but like, in the industry as an architect as well. You know, you can put Not designer or business manager on your resume and so forth. And these are additional skills you’re bringing to the table that when it comes down to it, like, when you’re getting employed, I guess it’s, it’s, I think that’s gonna be really valuable. So I want to ask Do you have any advice for someone to balance working on something else while also studying architecture?

Well, it’s funny you say that because I know this wasn’t your question, but someone asked me in the past about design competitions, and they asked me a lot because I recently did one and I undertook that at the last few weeks of my semester, so call me crazy but from my work, you know, be sitting doing rendering for three hours and I just wanted to get you know, some some different you know, change of scenery. So I’ve worked on it was a kitchen design competition. Run around Australia. And I found that having something else to work on really refreshes your mind. It’s almost like going outside, going for a walk and then coming back because your mind, you know, you could get really, really tired of doing the same thing over and over again. And sometimes you need something else to take your mind off it for a few minutes to come back, you know, much more first and no talking about competitions. I would definitely recommend people getting into that. So in my kitchen design competition, just purely just for fun, you know, just to get my mind off my current studies, but also, you know, got to learn a lot more about the little details of cabinetry and the manufacturers and budget and actually went on to win that There’s an aha Yeah, I didn’t plan on doing I just did it for my own development. But when he called me is like ultimate, you know, because there are a few winners, he’s not going to let you know that you are the winner and I was like, Okay, what fifth or sixth? At the end of the phone calls I did wait one more thing to ask like what I can ask sweet. So the kitchen is actually going to build right now. So it’s gonna be really wow. So anyone looking to do something else with the with the time zone?

Wow, you have to send me some photos or something of that and I’ll put on the screen for this because that’s really cool. Man, do you really like are the master. The fact that you’ve done that in your bio, you’ve got your final submission and so that really seeing both your architecture working and also doing something else. I think that

Well, it helped me remain focusses. this. And I would come back with a fresh mind. It was a win-win, it was great.

Oh yeah. And I think that’s what architecture is kind of all about. Because if you’re working in a firm, you know, you’re going to have multiple projects at once. You can’t just work on one thing. So that’s really cool. So talking about competitions. Like how did you find that kitchen competition because I’ve had a look around as well, a bit myself this questions more for me, I guess. But for everyone else that wants to do competitions as well. Where would you go about finding them?

This was more random on community Facebook group and my mate. He was actually on at the time, so I joined later, he just sent me a message that he should go back to take something like jerk. I didn’t really look into it for weeks and then eventually Down at the brief and standard working on so those just more random but I think I believe there’s a couple Instagram pages to share competition too much all day off and email them to you and you first turn on the link or something. Yep. But I’m sure that to market different competitions going around text for students

and I kind of makes me think like the fact that you’ve just had this sent to you and you thought nothing of it at the start, but you’ve turned it into actually, you know, you made it happen and you’ve just gone with it. And I think that’s really cool that you’re just kind of when you’ve got an opportunity in front of you just to take it and you know, your first place and you’ve learned a lot from

1. I couldn’t let myself not finish it. You know, just I told myself wanted to quit probably five turned arms was at this point anyways, I don’t know. But I just had to submit submit something and I’m happy I did.

That’s awesome. So with this app idea, you sound like you’re a bit of a roadblock at the moment. Yeah. Could you tell us a bit more about what skills that you require to move forward? I guess. And if there’s someone who’s listening to this, who wants to get on board, what skills would they need to help them out?

Chaim  17:33 

So at this point, the number one roadblock is can we access this building information without to counsel to see what sort of information is readily accessible to the public. And they did respond that the density matters much that I could see other than I think the lead contractor and maybe the perfect size Which is going for that’s just tipping the surface of what I’m trying to access. So I believe that if there’s if there’s a way to assets, the specification of a given project, that would be the key, and then creating the technical side of things to be able to extract the relevant information from that. That is very doable. Sure. That’s the main robot is accessing the building information and I’m meeting with the doctor tomorrow. And I’m going to speak to him and see what’s possible, what’s not possible and see what happens. But if there’s somebody out there that may be able to shed some light on this, we’d be more than happy to, to hear what you have to say and you know, potentially partner up with if that is the case.

Beautiful. Out of curiosity, who was the architect that you’re meeting with? Is it a Melbourne based architect?

Chaim  19:30 

Yeah. So about six months ago, took this initiative to reach out to several architecture firms and see if I could meet with one of the architects I just put up, wrote up a list of like 10 questions. And I thought it’d be really great not to make the connection but to hear from a practicing architect. And I met I think it was 12 or two Aloe Vera, from small firms to the large firms. And you know, I wish I would have compiled all the data I got it because I got such such good information not just to me, but for anyone, any student, you know, questions to do it, how to know how to go about getting a job, more content, more personal questions as to why they started off picture how they got to the top role. So one of the was actually I think the first after that I met with decide to reach out to him again and see if he’ll he’ll be willing to me with me, talking about what’s happened was really common in meeting tomorrow and hopefully a couple more in the next few weeks to see if it’s possible.

That’s awesome. And I think that a lot of students get caught up with they they would think that architects of these kind of busy people that have no time and they don’t want to help younger people, but From what I’ve experienced it I’m sure you have to you’ve kind of realized that architects so they love helping, you know, people like you and I and architecture students in general. So to go out and actually just meet with them and ask them questions and just get name out there, it’s it’s such a great idea.

Well definitely recommend it. All it takes is one phone call or one email to the phone that you’re interested in or local phone and I’d say 90% of the time, they’d be more than happy to meet with you. Have a chat. So that was great. Oh, definitely.

And a tip for doing that. If anyone’s listening, just buy them a coffee or lunch or something that’d be over the moon with joy.

It’s great. Okay, so I want to move on from that. I want to talk about kind of how you’ve progressed over the past years, because having that experience, doing a diploma first would have given you a massive Head Start over the shins and if years of architecture school. So, however you want to still come across challenges and you would have made mistakes. Is there anything that you wish you would have known? When starting from the start again, say, for a high school student who’s looking to be an architect, what advice would you have for them?

Chaim  22:20 

Interesting q uestion. What advice would I give to an Archi student? I’ll say, just never be, never give up. When you’re you’re overwhelmed to know, you know, you’re going to get deadlines and there’s gonna be times where you feel like, you won’t be able to make it and it’s impossible but you keep persevering and working through it, you’re gonna, you’re going to make it through and you’ll make it to the end even though not at the end. I just found that they know like a few days before deadlines on stressing you out or not to do but you just have to sit down Through a summit where you can, you’ll get there eventually.

Love that and kind of leads me on I want to talk about late nights because that’s quite a name, I guess that’s developed. But students don’t sleep. And you’re quite far into your architecture journey now. And you would have experienced the sleepless nights and long days. So do you have any methods you do to avoid staying up all night? Or to better manage your time so that you aren’t stressed?

Chaim  23:36 

Yeah, so funnily enough, I actually have no idea. I’m breaking the myth.

Kyle  23:43 

Yeah, I was gonna say do you think that’s a bit of a misconception? Because I haven’t either.

Chaim  23:47 

I mean, have you had all-nighters?

Kyle  23:49 

I’m usually in bed by 11, 12 the latest.

Chaim  23:54 

I’m in bed by 7 pm

Chaim  23:58 

I think it’s a misconception, people get scared almost when they hear that stuff on ours. But when I do come home, and probably be I’m a computer from like, six 7pm to 11. So it’s a good to me for five hours tops, but never had to do all nighters. So I haven’t had to deal with that idea. But what I did find with my, you know, limited hours that a computer is that as I said earlier, when you bounce around between different projects that you’re working on, because you would typically be working on, you might be doing physical modeling for this unit while you’re doing rendering for the other one. I found that when you went to almost become stale, would just sit in front of your computer for two hours trying to get this render in. It’ll be nice to you know, move on, put your laptop away, get the model that were from that for a couple hours, and just bounce around between all your different tasks. Though keep everything fresh and going.

Yeah, I agree at that point that you made that you’ve never made a never had a Oh, neither are you always in bed by 11 or whatever that kind of proves that you’re good at managing your time and balancing these things. So I think that’s pretty cool. So we are almost running out of time. So I’ve got a couple of shorter questions for you. Sort of like a fire round. So if you have one, what’s your favorite architecture book?

Um. Favourite architecture book? That’s a good one. I just bought the book hundred one things that and when I saw you posted it, yeah.

it was really good. I knew a lot of that information just because I’ve been studying it now for a few years, but it was it’s probably the most concise book that you know, you could take on the owner covers everything from dataset or block size and easy to digest. So I definitely recommend that.

And you did mention that you audit Rich Dad Poor Dad before. So I want to say what’s your favorite business or kind of entrepreneurship book. That’s not architecture lighted.

Oh, I have to say that the key KPI, the key person of influence with author was read that and listen to the audiobook. And it was it was really good for my self development.

I haven’t read that one, but I’ll check it out. So who’s your favorite architect?

Well, international lifestyle architect or just in general, either. Well, on a local level, a lot, Joe outset. Love this designs and on a more global level. I have to say Zaha Hadid. I wouldn’t particularly design with that, but I really do appreciate it. It’s amazing. The buildings coming out of it.

Don’t Don’t think that what somebody else is doing is the The only way to do it, you know, if you find that, you know, sort of something fun another way to do it, you know, and you’ll be fine.

So I want to get to know a bit more about you and your story. So in the emails you were sending me, you said that you’re about two months out of college and you chose to go to art school because High School was boring and not for you, which I completely agree with. Could you tell me a bit more about yourself and where you are in terms of Architecture?

I’m Vesal from Iran, Tehran, and I’m 19 years old. I have graduated in practical University in cottage and I’m alive with architecture. I love the things that are related to architecture. That’s all.

Beautiful. And so, you decided on architecture since you were 13. So why did you Why did you decide to pursue architecture? What what was so appealing? or What did you like the most about architecture?

Vesal  3:21 

First, I have to say, none of my family is graduate from architecture and I wanted to major in something different in my family. I wanted to experience something different. And on the other hand, my oldest sister knew about my skills and the economy of my country, she told me to, she offered me to go to architecture school and I accepted it. And from my childhood, I loved building and making my kids I’ve played seems Love that I’m still in love with that game. Even when I saw a thing, I started to draw doors and windows for that. And I knew about my skill. I prepare to continue in lots I have the skill.

Awesome. And so over the past that though be six years now, have you ever lost motivation to study architecture? And if so, how did you convince yourself to keep on going through that? Hmm,

Vesal  4:43 

yes, I first lost my motivation last time, but I am a human, you know, we are all human, not computers. We need rest. You know, when Person focused on a special thing for a long time. And she or he needs to have some rest. Now, of course I can’t accept any excuses except rest except tired things like this. And sometimes when my teachers are not, we’re not so friendly with me. And they hate me like a simple like algebra students. I lost my motivation and after a bad day and knew about me, we started to have gorgeous designs. I finished so many beautiful designs and process projects with employee attrition. That is There’s no reason to giving up and losing your motivation and the way you love. I’m sorry, I can’t speak. And so, for the students who are out there who struggle to stay motivated and stay on track, to kind of had this long term motivation like you did for six years, what advice would you give to them who are struggling?

Well believe your skills, leave your thoughts and let yourself be something tire. And the situation in a personal life sometimes is a variable, you know, and it’s normal to sometimes giving up and you know, when an architecture has enough of knowledge, that What I inner misty is creating she or he could never get tired, you know.

Yeah, I agree  if you have a passion for something then it doesn’t consider as work. And it really helps push you towards doing it more and doing more of what you love because it’s, it’s something you enjoy doing so it’s not work to you. And so you mentioned that you go to art school and so I wonder what I want to know how this differs or how this is different to high school?

Absolutely, artist school and high school has so many different in the article you can see more, in my viewpoint, you can see so many special characters, so many special people with different mind, you know You can see so many colors, you can see so many judgments from projects that see it’s I prefer artist school because I love art. And I think I’ve created creative just for art. You know, high school was so boring for me mathematics, physics was so boring for me. There were too many steel danced at that word with color. They just wrote numbers. And like this, it was fun for me. It’s my character.

Sweet. And on that topic, is there anything you do in your free time? Because you’re obviously very artistic and very creative. And so that’s kind of something that you’ve got an edge over other students with. But is there anything you do in your free time to get ready for architecture school or I guess any any kind of drawing or reading or Practicing using programs and software. So anything you do,

yeah, I tried to learn Revit with myself in house. And also I practice tree, the max. And I love it. I love this modeling program. And I also watch architecture progressed in YouTube and TV. And one of my teachers, my one of my best teachers have offered me to work with her. And I accept that I’m working with her. Yeah,
